Jamnagar, the royal city founded by Jam Rava Jadeja in or around 1540 AD has a tradition of justice. The Jams dispensed justice from the old court building. Those found guilty or those under trial were remanded to judicial custody in Jamnagar prison. Jamnagar district prison is located near Pavan Chakki in Bassavnagar and has a capacity to house about 500 inmates. According to the last prison census there were 56 convicted inmates, 439 under trials and 30 others held on one charge or the other.
