Establishment of State Bank of Saurashtra

Before 1948, the Saurashtra region, which is a part of Gujarat at present, was constituted by a number of small towns as well as some old royal states. Among the big states were Bhavnagar, Porbandar, Rajkot, and the two smaller states were Palitana and Vadia. They established their own Darbar Banks, the oldest one being Darbar Bank in Bhavnagar which was set up in 1902. The establishments catered majorly to the governmental needs of their royal states by serving as depositories for their savings. After the the Saurashtra state got its separate identoty in 1948, there happened amalgamation of these banks. The Bhavnagar Darbar Bank then became the State Bank of Saurashtra.

In 1960, after the Gujarat became a separate state, the bank’s major operation - Saurashtra, became a part of Gujarat state. During the same period, the State Bank of India took charge of the State Bank of Saurashtra, and also of the major state-owned banks. In the meantime, the number of branches rose to 24 in total comprising of average deposit sum of Rs.13.39 crores, and investment sum of Rs.8.04 crores. At that time, there were just 886 employees working in the bank.

The first Chairman of the bank was Jagubai S.Parikh, who worked until 1960. He worked as the deputy Chief Minister of Bhavnagar State Cabinet and held the honor of being the first Finance Minister in Saurashtra Cabinet of post independence era. The State Bank today, is a 100 percent subsidiary of State Bank of India. The term 'Merger' serves just a technical term here.
