Jamnagar District Jail

Jamnagar, the royal city founded by Jam Rava Jadeja in or around 1540 AD has a tradition of justice. The Jams dispensed justice from the old court building. Those found guilty or those under trial were remanded to judicial custody in Jamnagar prison. Jamnagar district prison is located near Pavan Chakki in Bassavnagar and has a capacity to house about 500 inmates. According to the last prison census there were 56 convicted inmates, 439 under trials and 30 others held on one charge or the other.

The objectives of Jamnagar prison are to implement the sentence laid down by the judges. The prison authorities also have the responsibility of ensuring safety, security and health of inmates. Incarceration is not the  only objective. Jamnagar prison also seeks to reform inmates mentally and bring about positive changes in their outlook towards society. Each inmate undergoes training, works in the prison and moves towards re-establishment as a member of society. The human rights of each inmate are also safeguarded by the prison objectives. It is compulsory for each inmate to undergo education, if he lacks it and facilities are available within the premises. This includes general education as well as vocational education to equip him with skills that will help him support himself. There is a library on the premises and inmates are encouraged to read and develop their personality.

The prison is a hive of hectic activity. On the one hand there are regular meetings and seminars for prisoners to steer them in a positive direction. On the other hand there are vocational activities and training programmes conducted on a daily basis. Prisoners also work and their creations are sold in the markets. Standard food is made available and there is an on the premises health care center to take care of any illnesses.

The overall administration of Jamnagar prison is handled by the jail inspector. He has to oversee the inmates as well as handle day to day activities, accounting, purchases and other sundry matters.
