Top Wildlife Sanctuaries of Jamnagar

Jamnagar, the royal city founded by Ram Rava Jadeja sometime around 1540 AD is the capital of Jamnagar State, known for its famous wildlife sanctuaries. Though the city itself has its attractions in the form of palaces, forts and temples, what is unique is the presence of the Khijadia Bird Sanctuary, the Gaga Wildlife Sanctuary and the Marine National Park, the only one of its kind in India. The Ranjitsagar Dam

The Ranjitsagar Dam, close to the city, is a mini-sanctuary of sorts with a number of birds making it their home and hunting grounds. It is only a few kilometers from Bedi Gate, located near Dared along State Highway 229 on the Sama Road. Gaga Wildlife Sanctuary

A 332 square km area on the coastal areas of the Gulf of Kutch was designated as the Gaga Wildlife Sanctuary in 1988. Mae up of flat wastelands and water bodies, it is home to vertebrates and invertebrates. Local birds as well as migratory birds thrive here, safe from humans and predators. You can find white pelicans, spot billed ducks, flamingos and other birds peacefully coexisting with each other.

Khijadia Bird Sanctuary

The Khijadia Bird Sanctuary is located about 12 kilometers from Jamnagar, accessible by buses and private vehicles. The sanctuary is spread over a 6 square kilometer area covering fresh water lakes on one side of a check dam on the Ruparel river and salt water marshes and Mangroves on the other side leading to the sea. This has created a unique ecosystem and biodiversity. You can find marine species of birds as well as land birds in this sanctuary.

The Marine National Park

This is unique and the only one of its kind spread over 270 square kilometers from Jodiya to Okha, a designated marine sanctuary. The entire Marine National Park covers 110 square kilometers and was defined in 1982.

Visitors need permit from the Forest Department, the Customs and the Port authorities. Narara island, accessible from the mainland and Pirotan Islands, accessible only by boat, are the main attractions. Coral reefs are the main attraction at Pirotan and you can view a variety of marine life in the crystal clear waters. Octopus, jelly fish, star fish, sponges, crabs, mollusks, mammals, turtles and anemones are clearly visible. There are 94 species of water birds and over 100 species of algae waiting to be discovered in the Marine National Park. Start early, fix timings to coincide with the tide and wear rubber soled shoes. Narara is more convenient to visit and gives you an opportunity to explore breathtakingly beautiful and colorful coral reefs, the marine aquatic life as well as birds on this island.
